How to safely pick up Needles

If you see used needles or syringes (also known as “sharps”), follow the tips below to pick them up safely.

  • DO NOT touch a needle with your hands. Wear needle-safe gloves on both hands, and use another object, like tongs or pliers, to pick up used needles.

  • Collect needles in thick, puncture-proof containers. Detergent bottles or coffee cans work well.

  • Dispose of the sharps you collect safely and responsibly. You can drop off needles in a properly sealed container for free at any hospital or nursing home, or call us at 585-454-5556.
