August Is Overdose Awareness Month

by Alexa Tila

Harm Reduction Saves Lives

August is a time to remember those we have lost to overdose, support people and families affected by substance use, and raise awareness about the steps we can all take to prevent overdose deaths.

What Is Harm Reduction?

Harm reduction is a practical, compassionate approach to substance use. It focuses on meeting people where they are, reducing the risks associated with substance use, and helping people stay connected to care.

At Trillium Health, our Harm Reduction Services provide a safe, anonymous, and non-judgmental place for people who use drugs, their families, and the community.

Naloxone Can Save a Life

One of the most important tools in preventing fatal opioid overdoses is naloxone, a medication that can rapidly reverse an opioid overdose. It can be administered by someone nearby, making it an important resource for people who use opioids as well as their friends, family members, and community members.

Trillium Health offers free opioid overdose prevention and naloxone training online, in person, and over the phone. Training can help community members recognize an opioid overdose and understand how to respond. You don't have to be a healthcare professional to learn how to save a life.

To register for an upcoming training session, click here. If you have any questions, please contact OOP@trilliumhealth.org, or call 585.210.4146.

Harm Reduction Is About More Than Overdose Prevention

Preventing overdose is only one part of harm reduction. People who use drugs may also face barriers to healthcare, housing, food, transportation, and other basic needs.

Trillium's Harm Reduction Services can connect people with:

  • Free HIV, Hepatitis C, and STI testing
  • Primary and wound care
  • Vaccinations
  • Safer-use supplies and education
  • Substance use treatment and other healthcare services
  • Food, clothing, and other basic necessities
  • Connections to additional community resources

This Overdose Awareness Month, Take Action

August 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day, but overdose prevention isn't limited to one day or one month.

You can help by learning how to recognize an overdose, carrying naloxone, learning how to use it, sharing accurate information, and treating people affected by substance use with compassion rather than judgment.

A few minutes of education could help save a life.
