Trillium Health Wins Award from the New York State Department of Health, AIDS Institute

Nov 6, 2023

Recognized for the use of injectable medications for HIV prevention and treatment

November 6, 2023 (Rochester, NY) – Trillium Health is proud to announce that it has won an award from the New York State Department of Health and the AIDS Institute (the Commissioner’s Special Recognition Award in the HIV Category). This award recognizes Trillium Health’s model program for making the new injectable HIV drugs available to Trillium Health’s patients.

“We are so proud to win this award,” said Dr. William Valenti, Senior Vice President for Strategic Advancement, Chief of Innovation, Co-Founder, and Staff Physician at Trillium Health. “For many people, injectable medications are more convenient because they don’t have to remember to take a pill every day. When taken as directed, injectable medications can provide long-lasting protection against HIV. They can also be used by people who are living with HIV to suppress their viral load. Trillium Health has always been at the forefront of HIV prevention and treatment, and we were honored to be recognized by the New York State Department of Health and the AIDS Institute.”

The injectables program is a component of the End the Epidemic initiative, which began in 2014. Trillium Health supports the initiative through its multi-disciplinary approach to healthcare, which includes on-site treatment adherence, pharmacy consultations, care management/social work, behavioral wellness, and food and housing programs. This comprehensive approach results in positive health outcomes – including an HIV viral load suppression rate that’s consistently 92% or higher.

Trillium Health participated in two clinical trials using injectables – the PILLAR Study and the BEYOND Study. Both PILLAR and BEYOND are national multisite studies sponsored by ViiV Healthcare. “Trillium Health was founded in the 1980’s during the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis,” said Dr. Valenti. “It has always been a part of our culture to develop cutting-edge programs that reflect contemporary HIV treatment and prevention.”

The award will be presented on November 30th during the 8th Annual Ending the Epidemic Summit and 25th Annual World AIDS Day event in Albany.
